From the Oregonian:
To the rest of the world, she is Joy Carlson, retired Lake Oswego travel agent. But when she pulls open the front doors of Portland Meadows, as she did Monday, she is transformed. She is an Owner, with a stake in the outcome of Oregon Championship Day.

In the $10,000 Oregon His Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino, it was maiden Jacqueline’s Angel who made a wide sweeping move at the quarter pole and won impressively. Jacqueline’s Angel had been a maiden going into the race, but he was very contentious in his previous races and proved his talent today, as he scored by a length for jockey Mark Anderson.
Jacqueline’s Angel races for owner Susan Boatfield and trainer Jim Fergason. Thunder Thorn finished in the second spot with Beacon Rock rounding out the trifecta.
The Lethal Grande Sprint presented by Spirit Mountain Casino was surely one of the most interesting of the day, not the least of which because of the huge upset win scored by Gameshy. Gameshy sat a good stalking trip for jockey Leonel Camacho-Flores and quickly took command as the field entered the stretch, pulling away in the end to win at 18 to 1.
The race started off strange as Jimbos Fire Ant started off for the lead, suddenly stopped and fell back to last and then sprinted up again to take the lead as the field went into the far turn. Jimbos Fire Ant battled with Ex Mountain Cop as the field approached the quarter pole, but then Jimbos Fire Ant drifted very wide and weakened through the lane. Ex Mountain Cop battled on after being passed by Gameshy, but was only able to manage a third place finish.
Brave Hearted rallied up to just get the second spot from Ex Mountain Cop who finished third. Gameshy races for owner/trainer M.W. 'Sam' Davis.
Smoken Sham kept his perfect record intact, but he had to work for it as he scored in the $20,000 Bill Wineberg Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino. Smoken Sham had to overcome trouble as he was pinched back at the start and came away last. Jockey Joe Crispin quickly got his two year old back on track though and proceeded to move up on the outside and slowly creep back into the contention as the field reached the far turn. At the quarter pole, Crispin turned his charge loose, and Smoken Sham quickly came calling after long time front runner Smart As Jim. Smoken Sham quickly put away that rival and held off the strong late run of long shot Cascade Carson who closed very strongly to only miss by half a length.
Smoken Sham is now a perfect three for three for owner/breeder Patrick Cosgrove and trainer Ben Root. Root had a milestone day winning three stakes races.
“He made a big run,” said Root of Smoken Sham. “He got a little green once he got the lead and the runner up ran a big race. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Old Smoke’ just yet.”
Cascade Carson finished a strong second with Smart as Jim finishing up third. Final time for the six furlongs was 1:14.25.
In the co-featured $20,000 Janet Wineberg Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino it was another Root runner taking top billing as Shame on Rose drew off down the lane to win by six lengths. The two year old daughter of Seattle Shamus was sent off as the 9/5 post time favorite, and took command shortly after the gate was sprung. Marijo Terleski then saved some in the tank as Shame on Rosie drew off down the stretch.
Shame on Rosie races for owners Gate 2 Wire racing. Rockhill Gold finished up in the second spot with Storm N The Harbor rounding out the trifecta.
The stakes action kicked off in the third race with the $10,000 Oregon Hers Stakes presented by Spirit Mountain Casino with the prohibitive favorite Nikki S. winning by a length and a half. Nikki S. settled back in last for much of the running as Bagajawea set a slow early tempo. As the field turned for home, the early leaders began to fade and it was Nikki S and Purple Kaycee who pounced on them. Nikki S was able to outkick Purple Kaycee to the finish line however and was victorious. David Lopez was on board for the winning ride for owner Rod Lowe and trainer Ben Root. Purple Kaycee finished second with Kitty Mac up for the third spot.
News and Notes…..Corriendo Baquero scored a 33 to 1 upset winning the Oregon Starter Handicap in the day’s 7th race. Jose Zunino was on board for the upset win for owner/trainer Charlene Whiteside……..Tequila Tipsy won her third race of the meeting as she powered home to win the Oregon Distaff Starter Handicap in the day’s ninth and final race. Tequila Tipsy was ridden by Luis Torres for trainer Vanessa Hunt and owners W. Remmers, Ron Sutton, and Vanessa Hunt.

Smoken Sham ran his record to a perfect two for two as he closed from far back to win the $18,000 Dennis Dodge Memorial Stakes at Portland Meadows. Smoken Sham sat back in the seventh position through the early going as the even money favorite Regal Mind sizzled through opening quarter mile in 21.60. Regal Mind was headed turning for home by the second choice in the wagering, Honour N Defer who started to pull away, but by mid stretch it was clear that Smoken Sham was rallying quickly. Smoken Sham took the lead at the sixteenth pole and widened in the final strides to win by two and three quarter lengths.
Joe Crispin was aboard for the winning ride for owner/breeder Patrick Cosgrove and trainer Ben Root. Smoken Sham completed the five and one half furlong distance in 1:05.60 over the wet fast going.
Honour N Defer held the second spot, almost four lengths in front of Meen Miner who rallied up to finish third. The even-money favorite Regal Mind faded down the lane to finish fifth.
The Dennis Dodge Memorial Stakes is named after the long-time Daily Racing Form writer and handicapper Dennis Dodge, who covered the Northwest tracks for over 30 years, leading up to his passing in 2008.
