Coronas At Delmar Wires Portland Mile

Posted by: admin on Thursday, April 29, 2010 - 10:45 AM
Oregon Racing
Coronas at Delmar went right to front and stayed there the entire trip as he powered to his sixth consecutive victory at Portland Meadows, winning the $50,000 Portland Mile over a sloppy Portland Meadows oval. Coronas at Delmar took the early lead over stablemate Delaware Doe who set up in the second position through opening fractions of 23.21 and 46.15 for the opening half mile. Coronas at Delmar opened up as the field turned for home and was long gone by the time long shot Overtime Victory started closing down the outside of the track. Overtime Victory got up for a clear cut second place finish while Stealth Attack ran third The final time for the Portland Mile was a very solid 1:36.59. Juan Gutierrez shipped down from his base at Emerald Downs to ride Coronas at Delmar for trainer Jonathan Nance who trains the horse for his wife Shelly who owns the horse.

Coronas at Delmar came to Portland Meadows from California earlier in the meet with little to no expectations. His trainer at the time was Jerry Hollendorfer, all time leading trainer in the Bay Area with over $5,000 career wins. Coronas at Delmar was sent to Portland Meadows to find his level because he clearly wasn’t competing well enough to stay at Golden Gate Fields. Coronas at Delmar came here and won for $2,500, and then won again at that claiming price in his second local start. Trainer Jonathan Nance and his wife Shelly decided to put down the $2,500 to claim Coronas at Delmar out of that start. Nance quickly jumped the horse up to a $6,250 claiming event which Coronas at Delmar proceeded to win. His next start was another powerful victory, this time for a $16,000 optional claiming race. Nance then decided to move Coronas at Delmar up to try top sprinters in the Governor’s Speed Handicap where he took on Kruger Park who won this year’s Inaugural Handicap. Coronas at Delmar and Kruger Park hooked up in a memorable battle that day, with Coronas at Delmar prevailing.

Coronas at Delmar was sent off at 9/2 in the Portland Mile and returned $11.80 for the win. Trainer Jonathan Nance also trained the runner up Overtime Victory. Favored Saratoga’s Magic never ran a step as he backed up and was never involved finishing up eighth. Shem who went off as the second choice chased the leader, but faded as they moved into the stretch and finished sixth.

DRF Previews Oregon Derby

Posted by: admin on Thursday, April 29, 2010 - 10:27 AM
Oregon Racing
Pat Jarvis knows she may be bucking the odds a little bit, but she's confident going into Saturday's 58th running of the Oregon Derby on closing day at Portland Meadows. Jarvis will saddle the filly Caged Mistress against six males, including even-money favorite Seven Torrents, who has won stakes as the odds-on favorite in each of his three Portland Meadows starts.

Oregon Derby

Posted by: admin on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 - 06:53 PM
Oregon Racing
Portland Meadows will close out its 63rd season of live racing on Saturday May 1st with a nine race card that features the 58th running of the $25,000 Oregon Derby. That, along with simulcasting of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs, will cap off what should be a huge closing day at the Delta Park race track.

A field of seven has been entered into the Oregon Derby, and it’s no secret who the headliner is: Seven Torrents. Seven Torrents has rattled off three consecutive stakes wins at Portland Meadows, including the $48,000 Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Derby back on January 18th. Juan Gutierrez will ship down to ride the horse once again for trainer Jim Penney. Seven Torrents has remained in training at Penney’s home track of Emerald Downs throughout the winter and spring. Seven Torrents will break from post five and is even money on the morning line.

An interesting entry into the Oregon Derby is Oregon Oaks winner Caged Mistress, who has drawn post two. Caged Mistress has been very sharp in a pair of wins at Portland Meadows in her last two starts; leading jockey Joe Crispin will be up. Caged Mistress goes for the barn of trainer Pat Jarvis, who has enjoyed another solid season at Portland Meadows. Caged Mistress is the lone filly in the race.

The new face in the group is Gentle Rain, who is coming off a big score in an Invitational Handicap on April 7th at the one mile and one sixteenth distance. Since shifting his game to two turns, Gentle Rain has really been flourishing, including a two length defeat when he ran second in the Willamette River Stakes behind Seven Torrents. David Lopez will take the mount for trainer Jonathan Nance.

Vitamin C, Classmate, Promiscuous Lad, and Brickyardtradition round out the field for the 58th running of the Oregon Derby. The Oregon Derby will go as the 9th race on Saturday, and post time for the race is approximately 2:33 pm. Portland Meadows will kick off the Oregon Derby Card with a special early first post time of 11:05 am. Simulcast wagering from Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, will begin at 7:35 am.

"Lean on Pete"

Posted by: admin on Saturday, April 24, 2010 - 02:22 PM
Oregon Racing
Willy Vlautin reads from "Lean on Pete" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powell's City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside Street, for any of you interested. Vlautin's latest novel is about a young fellow named Charley, who has recently relocated to Portland from Spokane with his father, and begins working on the backside.

Not sure how welcome of a reception Vlautin would get at PM as far as selling copies of his latest work, but we've already ordered the book because, poor indictment on horse racing or not, he's a gifted writer and the novel has already received very good reviews.

Portland Mile Nominations

Posted by: admin on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - 10:47 PM
Oregon Racing
Shippers could be tough in the 2010 Portland Mile

The $50,000 Portland Mile has attracted some very talented runners from up and down the West Coast. Nominations for Portland Meadows signature race came out on Tuesday with fourteen horses nominating for the one mile race which will be run on Wednesday April 28, 2010. Jerry Hollendorfer who has been a strong presence at Portland Meadows over the past couple of seasons has nominated both Lang Field and Saratoga’s Magic as Hollendorfer looks for back to back Portland Miles. Hollendorfer sent out Crafty Power in last year’s edition who went on to set a track record for the one mile distance, covering the ground in 1:36.20. Lang Field was just claimed by Hollendorfer for $25,000 off an impressive three length win at Golden Gate Fields. Saratoga’s Magic has been competeting against allowance runners at Golden Gate, but hasn’t won since August of 2008.

Rooster City will ship down from his base at Emerald Downs where he has been training very well for his four year old debut. Rooster City was beaten just a head in a pair of stakes last season at Emerald Downs including the Emerald Derby. He will be in the barn of trainer Jonathan Nance while he is in Portland. Numaany has the look of an intriguing shipper as well as he was dominant in many starter handicaps last season at Hastings Park. Numaany has been working at Hastings for their upcoming season, but may use the Portland Mile as his seasonal debut.

Coronas at Delmar and Shem headline the local contingent. Coronas At Delmar is a perfect 5 for 5 at Portland Meadows this season and has done it going straight up the class ladder. Claimed for just $2,500 in his second local start, Coronas at Delmar proceeded to win for $6,250 in his next start, followed that up with a win at the $16,000 Allowance optional claiming level, and in his most recent start, beat out top sprinter Kruger Park in the Governors Speed Handicap. Coronas at Delmar’s stablemate Delaware Doe has also been nominated for the Mile and is a perfect 4 for 4 at Portland Meadows for trainer Jonathan Nance. Shem has been racing at Portland Meadows recently and comes off a hard fought win against Tillman’s Image, who is also nominated for the Mile, in an Invitational Handicap on April 7th. Shem has 10 wins in his career and has earned over $273,000 in his brilliant career. Shem runs out of the barn of trainer Pat Jarvis who has also nominated Texas Wildcatter to the Mile. Texas Wildcatter is multiple stakes placed and has earned over $287,000 in his career, even though he only has three wins.

Gassan Royal, Overtime Victory, Primary Notice, Stealth Attack, and Revoluta are also nominated for the $50,000 Portland Mile. The Mile will be run on Wednesday April 28th and entries for the race will be drawn on Friday April 23rd.

From the Tri-City Herald:

Forget the animosity between the Benton County Commissioners and the Tri-City Horse Racing Association, about the horsemen being locked out of the stables at Sun Downs for nine months.

That's on the backburner.

It's time to race, as Sun Downs opens its 10-day meet Saturday with a nine-race card, with post time at 1:30 p.m.

Trainer On Derby Trail Former Jockey At Portland

Miscellaneous
From the Las Cruces Sun-News:

SUNLAND PARK - Shannon Ritter loves horses, loves to work hard and has plenty of respect from those close to her.

On Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, the 45-year-old trainer won her biggest race of her career when her up and coming 3-year-old, Endorsement roared to a win in the 8th running of the one and 1/8th mile Sunland Derby.

The race was worth $400,000 to the winner.

"I'm a hands on type of trainer, this is a great feeling to win this race," said Ritter, who hails from St. Paul, Minn.

Previously, Ritter's biggest victory came with a horse named West Coast Swing in a $75,000 race two years ago.

Ritter, who has been a trainer for five years, has learned under the guidance of trainer Elliott Walden, who is the racing manager for WinStar Farm.

Ritter has a long history in the sport as a jockey. She rode horses at Portland Meadows and Canterbury Downs. She won a racing title at Portland Meadows during the 1990-91 season. She was a jockey for nearly eight years before becoming a trainer.
