"I talked to exercise riders, trainers, jockeys and track officials. All the information we have is that the track is in excellent condition," (Randy) Evers said.
But on Saturday track veterinarians euthanized two horses who broke down in non-related incidents during the eighth race, said Evers, adding he had reviewed tapes of the race and conferred with track officials.

From the Medford Mail Tribune:
Snip N Dale picked up where he left off last year, winning the co-feature $4,450 Mail Tribune Stakes in record time during the fifth race of Saturday's season opener at Grants Pass Downs.
The 5-year-old quarter horse, ridden by jockey Joe Crispin, captured a victory in the same race in 2009.
The excitement of the day was stifled, however, when horses Timely Brush and Sandita were seriously injured during the eighth race and had to be euthanized. GP Downs underwent a $200,000 project in the offseason to improve the racing surface after three horses had to be euthanized after suffering injuries during races in 2009.

From the Medford Mail-Tribune:
Brenda Estes is among many to give the refurbished racing surface at Grants Pass Downs glowing reviews.
Estes, a Grants Pass native and fourth generation Oregonian, trained horses on the GP Downs 1/2-mile dirt oval throughout the winter and wetter than usual spring without missing a day because of track conditions.
