As we prepare for a very exciting Os West Fururity this Sunday, it seems a good time we reflect on the legacy of the race's namesake.
Ever enjoy the simple pleasure of roaming the Oregon coast, mile after mile with no trespassing signs? Thank Oswald "Os" West. While West was the Governor of Oregon from January 1911 to January of 1915, the land bordering the Pacific Ocean was protected for public use. In addition, during his time in office the office of State Forester and the Bureau of Forestry were established; as were the Fish Commission and Game Commission. Oswald West left a strong and spirited tradition of protecting and enjoying Oregon's natural resources.
While we're not thrilled that he was a militant prohibitionist (he raided a bar near Baker City on new year's eve 1913, which proved to be an unpopular move) there's no doubt Oswald West helped Oregon become a better place to live.
To hit the Os West exacta, attend Oregon Championship Day and then plan a weekend at Oswald West State Park, located about 10 miles south of Cannon Beach.
We raise a glass (of Pepsi, perhaps?) to a fine Oregonian, Oswald "Os" West.
