From Portland Meadows:
Portland Meadows and the OHBPA is giving away over $40,000 this summer at our OTB Guest Appreciation Parties
Portland Meadows is packing up our bags and heading out to all of our off track betting facilities in Oregon to give away over $40,000 this summer! Sponsored in part by the Oregon HBPA, Portland Meadows will be hosting Guest Appreciation parties at all of our off track betting facilities. The first party at Alexander OTB in Fairview was a smashing success with a huge crowd turning out to watch and wager on the Night of Stars on July 2nd. The parties will all feature great specials, free cake, great betting from some of the top tracks in North America, fantastic prize giveaways, and most importantly….Mystery Vouchers!!
Mystery Vouchers are one of the most exciting ways for fans to cash in at Portland Meadows OTB’s and the best part is, they are totally free! Every fan who attends an OTB Guest Appreciation Party will receive a sheet of five Mystery Vouchers*, each voucher worth between $3 and $100. So each sheet is worth at least $15, and up to $500!! There will be one voucher for each of the next five days the OTB is open after the party. Guests simply need to peel off the voucher for the given day, take it to the teller at the OTB, and see what it’s worth. It’s that simple. And everyone is a winner!
The Big OTB tour will kick off with a tour of Southern Oregon with a party at JD’s Sports Pub in Grants Pass on Saturday July 31 from 5 to 8pm. The following day, the party will move south to Lava Lanes in Medford for a party from 11am to 2pm on Saturday August 1. Next up will be a weekend in and around Portland with a party on Saturday August 7 from 11am to 2pm at the Sky Jockey Sports Bar located at the Red Lion Hotel near Portland International Airport. The following day we will head down to the Keystone Kafe in Lake Oswego for a Sunday party on August 8 from 11am to 2pm.
The Guest Appreciation Parties really crank up the following weekend as we are in Salem at Players OTB for a Friday night party from 5pm to 8pm on August 13. The following day it will be both the Rialto in Downtown Portland and the Favorite Mistake in Albany partying from 11am to 2pm on Saturday August 14. Then on Sunday August 15th, it will be a huge party at the Copper Penny in east Portland from 11am to 2pm.
The following weekend will include another Friday night at the Rialto Tigard Poolroom and OTB from 5 to 8pm on August 20. The next day it will be Coach’s Best Bet in Beaverton and Trackstirs in Springfield both hosting parties from 11am to 2pm on Saturday August 21. The Summer OTB tour wraps up the following week with a party at Lava Lanes in Bend from 4 to 7pm on Friday August 27.

Another story on jockeys, this time from the Seattle Times:
Since his return, Stillwell has won 25 of 80 races for trainer Charles Essex and has finished in the money in 62 percent of his races for Essex.
"He's a good, hard worker and I like the way he settles horses," Essex said. "We work well together. He does a lot of work in the morning with me and we talk a lot about what he sees with my horses. Or he'll call me at night and tell me some things he sees on replays. It just seems like he keeps getting better and better."
Stillwell started the comeback in 2007, riding in the bush tracks in Oregon. He had seen a documentary on Seabiscuit and told himself, "I need to ride."

The Idaho State Journal does a nice piece on two local jockeys, Todd Thomas and Jerry Remer, and their experiences and challenges breaking into racing.
A snippet:
“I just love it,” said Thomas, who builds medical supplies in Logan as his main job. “Riding is kind of like a hobby that pays. Some days it seems like a job, but I still enjoy it.”
When Thomas, now 38, was a young boy, he thought he might fit into the regular jockey’s mold. “I was that small kid who everyone picked on,” he said. “I didn’t start growing until after high school.”
But after he graduated from high school, he shot skyward in height. That didn’t stop him from galloping and exercising horses. “I was one of the best gallop boys,” he said.
Eventually, he got his license and was offered a ride. “I won my first race right here in Pocatello in 1993 and I thought I was a race rider,” he said. “I had only one more win that whole year.”

As a proud sponsor of the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Meadows is excited to announce a playoff ticket giveaway coming up at the track on Wednesday April 21st. As the Trail Blazers get set to take on the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs, Portland Meadows will send a lucky fan and their chosen guest to great seats at the Trail Blazers first home game of the series, coming up on Thursday night April 22nd. Live Racing begins at 12:40pm and fans can simply go to Portland Meadows Guest Services Headquarters located on the main concourse level to sign up.
After the day’s seventh race, we will draw as many names as there are horses in that day’s eighth race. The first name drawn will receive the #1 horse, the second name drawn will receive the #2 horse and so on, until the entire field is represented. There are eight scheduled runners in the eighth race, so barring any late scratches, there will be eight names drawn to vie for the tickets. Best of all, just like admission and parking at Portland Meadows, it’s free to play! It’s simply our way of giving back to some of the best sports fans in the country.
The pair tickets are located in the 100 level and will have you up close to the action of Trail Blazers Playoff basketball as they take on the Phoenix Suns in their first round match up. No purchase necessary to participate. There will be a consolation prize to the people whose names are drawn but are not victorious, they will receive a $20 Portland Meadows betting voucher and an official 2010 Portland Meadows hat. Must be of legal betting age, 18 years old to participate.

From the Tri-City Herald:
Forget the animosity between the Benton County Commissioners and the Tri-City Horse Racing Association, about the horsemen being locked out of the stables at Sun Downs for nine months.
That's on the backburner.
It's time to race, as Sun Downs opens its 10-day meet Saturday with a nine-race card, with post time at 1:30 p.m.

From the Las Cruces Sun-News:
SUNLAND PARK - Shannon Ritter loves horses, loves to work hard and has plenty of respect from those close to her.
On Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, the 45-year-old trainer won her biggest race of her career when her up and coming 3-year-old, Endorsement roared to a win in the 8th running of the one and 1/8th mile Sunland Derby.
The race was worth $400,000 to the winner.
"I'm a hands on type of trainer, this is a great feeling to win this race," said Ritter, who hails from St. Paul, Minn.
Previously, Ritter's biggest victory came with a horse named West Coast Swing in a $75,000 race two years ago.
Ritter, who has been a trainer for five years, has learned under the guidance of trainer Elliott Walden, who is the racing manager for WinStar Farm.
Ritter has a long history in the sport as a jockey. She rode horses at Portland Meadows and Canterbury Downs. She won a racing title at Portland Meadows during the 1990-91 season. She was a jockey for nearly eight years before becoming a trainer.
