In updating our links in the stallion section, we have learned that both Gold Meridian and Prince Stanley have passed away.
Leading sire 6 times in Oregon, Gold Meridian was owned by Don Jackson and stood at Flying Lark Ranch. By Seattle Slew out of Queen Louie (Crimson Satan), his lifetime progeny earnings total $8,779,524. He was the sire of two Grade 1 winners and two Grade 3 winners, including TEE KAY, the dam of SYMBOLI KRIS S, Japan's two-time Horse of the Year, who has over $8 million in earnings. Gold Meridian boasted average earnings per runner of nearly $34,000.
Prince Stanley, a son of Globe out of Be A Princess (Good Behaving) who stood at Painted Desert, has also passed away. His first foals are the yearlings of 2004.
Individuals who attended yesterday's meeting included Magna reps, Portland Meadows & MGP management, OTBA, HBPA, and OQHRA directors, a fair meet representative, and ORC Chairman Walters and Comm. Metcalf, amongst others.
ORC Executive Director Jodi Hanson served as somewhat of a moderator during the meeting, but discussion was rather informal.
The HBPA, OGA, OTBA, and OQRHA representatives talked about their respective organizations and listed some of their concerns:
*purse levels are too low
*racing opportunities are too few (outside of the PM dates for horses)
*concerns about the race surface at Portland Meadows.
Jeff Grady, formerly of PM/MGP and now of XpressBet, talked about the difficulties competing for the gambling dollar in Oregon, and his attempts to help both tracks survive since his arrival. With respect to track surface at PM, he mentioned that Magna is bringing the gentleman who has worked on the Santa Anita surface to Portland in the next week or so. This expert will offer his recommendations on what can be done.
Grady stressed that Magna will not just write checks, nor pour money into a black hole. Furthermore, Grady stated he doesn't ever want the Magna bosses to look at Oregon as expendable.
Chairman Walters described the makeup and duties of the ORC, stressed their role as primarily regulatory, with the safety and integrity of the racing their main concern. 17 FTE employees do the day-to-day work of ensuring that safety & integrity. He reminded everyone that the racing operator will need to make money and, in general, if they are acting within the law, the Commission will not tell them how to run their business. Walters later stressed that each organization must ask itself if it is doing all it can to help the industry before asking others to help.
Larry Campbell, a former legislator who now heads Oregon Victory PAC, stated that everyone in the room knows what the problems are, and added that the biggest threat looming is a proposed Cowlitz tribe casino just off of I-5 north of La Center, WA. It would be the biggest casino and potentially biggest gambling draw in the Portland Metro area. The talk is of the Cowlitz tribe parterning with the operators of the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut, the largest casino in the world.
This potential is real and has the Indian tribes in Oregon concerned. Likewise, it should have Oregon state lawmakers concerned about its effects on the state lottery.
Campbell said that we need to think in terms of "survival" and think a couple steps ahead. A positive is Portland Meadow's location and the possibility of doing something to increase purses outside of legislative changes.
A member of the Gilbert family spoke of her enthusiasm about all the groups meeting and the potential for revitalization of Portland Meadows. Her father worked along with Bill Wineberg to run Portland Meadows, so she remembers what it once was, and could be.
Talk followed amongst representatives of the organizations about how they could proceed in working as a united industry with respect to partenering with outside organizations and in dealing with the Legislature. If you would like to know who your legislator is, click here. Knowing who represents your interests in Salem was an important item mentioned. We're getting towards the end of campaign season, and the legislature reconvenes in just over a few months.
A follow-up meeting was planned after the representatives went back to their organizations to update them and get approval to pursue these avenues further.
A brief recap of yesterday's roundtable with the ORC and racing industry reps will be posted later today.

Yearlings whose purchases were voided are listed here.
If you would like to know more about the agent in question, you can find his website here. We did note the following statement on his website:
Over the years I have attended and have purchased Thoroughbreds from sales. I have researched many prospects for friends and Potential clients and have a vast Wealth of Knowledge in and around the racing industry. I have had many great experiences in this business and have met many great people such as Bob Baffert, Mike Pegram, Robert Lewis, D. Wayne Lukas, Neil Drysdale, and Frank Brothers. Jockeys Pat Day, Jerry Bailey , Shane Sellers, Jorge Chavas, Edgar Prado, Jose Santos Etc.. just to name a few. I have also had the opportunity to attend the Breeder's Cup 1992, the Kentucky Derby 2000 & 2003, Preakness & Pimlico Special 2003.
According to his website, he was licensed to train at Portland Meadows in 1993, and worked as a groom for Frank Lucarelli, Jose Corrales, and Jack Steiner at Longacres.
Mr. St. Amand has told Bloodhorse reporters he intends to sue the WTBA because they "should have been more diligent in checking Underwood's credit and should not have made so much information about the situation public."
To the best of our knowledge, sales results, regardless of what they are, are generally regarded as public information.
While this doesn't impact Oregon racing per se, it is timely considering our rapidly approaching mixed sale.
Final sale results are listed here.
