We've already seen some Oregon-bred two year olds race at Emerald Downs, and we know that we'll see more when Portland Meadows begins its 2004-2005 meet. If there are any Oregon-bred two year olds you think we should be on the lookout for, please don't hesitate to drop us a line! And there's no such thing as "too few" or "too many" to tell us about.

Portland Meadows News

Portland Meadows will be having a special event in conjunction with Breeder's Cup at Lone Star Park on October 30th. Also, the Portland Meadows website reports that we will see the start of the 2004-2005 season "on or about Saturday, October 19".

Don't forget, before Portland Meadows racing returns, there's still racing at Tillamook August 12 - 14, and Harney County Fair September 11 - 12! Portland Meadows may be our premiere racing facility, but they don't give winning owners and trainers a nice brick of cheese in the winner's circle. There's definitely something to be said for Oregon's wonderful fair meets!

Magna in the News

Evidently, current stockholders aren't too pleased about Magna Entertainment going private, or atleast with public stock being bought back for $7/share. From the Thoroughbred Times:

Magna Entertainment Corp. is the subject of several class-action lawsuits filed this week in Delaware, in which shareholders claim company officials violated their fiduciary duties in connection with the offer by parent company MI Developments Inc. to acquire all the outstanding shares of the racing operations unit’s public shares that MI Developments does not currently own.

From the Bloodhorse:

MI Developments announced Tuesday that it will seek to take racetrack operator Magna Entertainment private by purchasing the additional shares it does not own in a cash and stock transaction valued at $285.8 million...

"We believe that the development of MEC's under utilized lands and certain of its racing assets into destination retail-entertainment centers represents an attractive investment opportunity for MID," Tobin said. "Taking MEC private will improve MEC's ability to execute its strategy by improving its ability to obtain financing."

Magna in the News

Magna is in the news again, but quite a ways from Oregon.

The DRF reports that as Magna seeks to have year-round racing at Gulfstream Park, Calder Race Course may find a fight for their customer base. While the two tracks have co-existed peacefully for years (Gulfstream running winter dates, Calder summer) a change of racing dates may change the peace as well. Calder's president, Ken Dunn, had this to say:

"What I don't understand is that if somebody is investing $300 million in a business, as Magna is doing in the racing stage of their project, wouldn't it have made sense to have first reached out to the other stakeholders in all of this, such as the horsemen and Calder, to discuss their plans and put together something that might be good for all parties?"
