It would appear that Washington Thoroughbred decided to take down the online stallion register, or move it to a URL unknown. Unfortunately, this means a lot of our links to stallion pages are "dead" (do not work).
We will more than likely link to individual farm websites to showcase each stallion, and for those standing stallions who do not have websites, we will whip up a small page with contact info. The changes should be completed before the end of the business day.
Since the start of this year, over 80 individuals have bred Oregon-bred winners. This is fact is even more impressive considering it is only June!
Congratulations to all the breeders on all sides of the spectrum. May the latter part of the year prove equally fruitful!
Previously, we noted that Friends of the Multnomah County Fair requested the Oregon Racing Commission visit the idea of allowing horse racing during the fair. The fair is to be held September 29 through October 3.
While the request was put in a bit too late (hub funds are allocated at the first of the year and requests must be put in before then...also, HBPA, OTBA, etc. were not contacted) there is good reason to see horse racing at the fair in the future. According to the Multnomah County Fair website, Portland Meadows will be the site of the fair, as opposed to Oaks Park (where it has been held in the past).
We have been told that "the commission strongly encouraged the individuals representing Friends of the Multnomah County Fair to continue to pursue the various options available to conducting racing at Portland Meadows during the Multnomah County Fair."
We hope that the Friends of the Multnomah County Fair will heed this advice, and look to make horse racing an exciting and fun part of next year's fair!
...and misprints do, too.
The most recent edition of the Oregon Horse (combined with the Washington Thoroughbred magazine) noted that Sonny's Solo Halo is deceased. Thankfully, this was a misprint.
Chere' Heiss of Emerald Valley Farm reports that Sonny's Solo Halo is doing well. Sonny's Solo Halo is a son of Halo out of Softly (Solo Landing), and began standing at Emerald Valley Farm this year. You can visit the farm's website by clicking here.
And don't forget, the Oregon stallion roster can always be found here on the right hand side of the page.
Early entries for the Oregon Mixed Sale close this Friday, June 25. All entries close June 9.

On the agenda for tomorrow's ORC meeting in Grants Pass: "Request from Friends of Multnomah County Fair to Conduct Three Day Race Meet – Sept. 30; Oct. 2, 3, 2004"
There is a true history when it comes to county fair meets in Oregon outside of Prineville, Grants Pass, Union, Harney, and Tillamook, which we all know well. Horse racing was long ago a part of the Lane County Fair in Eugene, and was also part of the Multnomah County Fair in Gresham for quite some time.
You can read a brief history of the Multnomah County Fair in this PDF document.
From the Thoroughbred Times:
Magna Entertainment Corp., which previously had considered relocating its Oregon racing operation from Portland Meadows, has renewed its commitment to the racetrack and is in the process of investing $2.5-million in the property.
Even though Magna, which also owns Multnomah Greyhound Park in Wood Village, Oregon, discussed moving racing from Portland Meadows following a number of environmental issues with the site, Magna President Jeff Grady told the Portland Tribune that racing would stay at the track for the long term.
Read the rest of the article here.
And from the Portland Tribune's story:
Area’s future in flux
Potential development plans for the speedway property, as well as for Portland Meadows horse racing track, have been discussed for years. Toronto-based Magna Entertainment Corp. originally subleased operating rights to Portland Meadows from developer Tom Moyer, which gave the Portland developer time to rezone and design plans for the site.
The 20-acre Portland Meadows site would have become a mall under a plan promoted as recently as two years ago by Moyer. When the racetrack’s co-owners and city objected to the zoning change, Moyer sold the operating rights to Magna. The site, which is partially zoned commercial, has been a racetrack since 1947.
Moyer, who founded TMT Development Co., developed the Fox Tower downtown.
Magna, which also manages Multnomah Greyhound Park, had plans to move the horse racing operation to another location but has since reconsidered.
Magna President Jeff Grady now says horse racing will stay at Portland Meadows for the long term, and Magna is in the process of a $2.5 million cleanup of the property. The federal Environmental Protection Agency had fined the company for problems with its waste disposal system, which drained into the Columbia Slough.
“I’m not sure what they will move in there, but it would be nice if they brought some more business to this area of town,” Grady says.
John Southgate, project manager at the Portland Development Commission, says the Hayden Meadows area doesn’t have a long-term development plan.
“We had some conversations with Tom Moyer and some of the neighbors, but those were a couple years ago and they didn’t advance very far,” Southgate says. “We never even drafted a plan.”
Southgate says the PDC has put much of its energy in North Portland into helping develop the areas around the Interstate MAX stations. PDC officials, as with the general public, are not aware of any future plans for the speedway.

Congratulations to the new and returning OTBA directors. We wish them well as they work to represent the interests of Oregon Thoroughbred breeders! From the OTBA website:
The results of the recent election of five directors to the OTBA board are in; Carol Duby, Gerildyn “Jeri” Johnson, Bruce Loudon, Jack Root, Jr. and Raymond “Hack” Wilson were elected by the membership to serve a three-year-term on the board, beginning July 1.
Candidate Lorie Wigle has been appointed by the board to serve out the remaining year of Dr. Jerry Weaver’s term (Jerry recently resigned his seat because he is training horses in Arizona and California). Members of the board will elect officers during their next scheduled meeting July 10 in Prineville, Oregon.

To Jerry Weaver and Oregon-bred West Coast Monarch. West Coast Monarch will race tomorrow at Bay Meadows in the Bay Meadows Oaks (stakes race) for a purse of $75,000.
One and one-sixteenths mile on the turf, this race is for three year old fillies. We will be wishing West Coast Monarch an excellent race!
Also, Oregon-bred Sultan Pepper will run tonight in a Maiden Special Weight for a purse of $26,900.
An important snippet:
Something for everyone to shoot for is the Oregon-bred stake races this fall at Portland Meadows. The purse on the Oregon Futurity should be over $40,000, and the Bill & Janet Wineberg $20,000 plus (with the same purses structure as last season). There is more added money for these races because the Oregon Racing Commission allocated hub funds to match paid in nomination fees and Oregon-bred purse supplements. As never before eligible two-year olds that are nominated to these stakes take on new value. The price to supplement a horse that isn’t nominated is 20% of the gross purse. Good reason to watch for the Stakes Nomination Form in your mailbox this month. The deadline to nominate foals of 2004 is July 31. Don’t miss this opportunity to insure your foals are eligible for the 2006 stakes.

There are some great photos of Grants Pass and Emerald Downs from recent weeks posted here. Lots of Oregon-bred shots, and just noticed: an older photo of a very healthy-looking Kathy Mayo presenting a blanket to the winner of the Bettor's Invitational Handicap in the Grants Pass series.*
*Click below for more information on Kathy Mayo
Mayo was the nation's leading female rider in 1996, beating out Julie Krone by one win for a total of 142.
On January 2, 1998, while riding in a claiming race at Portland Meadows, Mayo's mount flipped over the inside metal rail. Though the horse was uninjured, Mayo suffered greatly when she was thrown against the railing. Mayo was left with no less than fractures to her back, ribs, and scapula, a shattered pelvis, and internal injuries such as a lacerated spleen and kidney damage.
Mayo defied the doctor's predictions of paralysis, and as evidenced by Nancy's photo, looks quite well.

Though it has nothing to do with Oregon racing, this is a nice AP article that will probably be found in papers today:
Suddenly, Smarty Jones is being mentioned in the same breath as Secretariat and Seabiscuit.
Though they have little in common as far as on-track performance, all three have managed to do one thing the same way:
Arrive on the scene as delicious diversions just when America was desperate for good news to offset bad times.
Read the article here.
And picked up from the Bloodhorse are these fabulous fan-letters to Smarty Jones from children:
"Dear Smarty Jones. Good luck at the Preakness. Smarty Jones, is it hard to see with a bumped eye? How are you? How munch races did you win?"
"We love you Smarty Jones. Make a movie like Seabiscuit."
"I am your number 1 fan. You ran as fast as a dog. My little sister likes you too."
"Congratulations, you ran fast on your last horse race. I can't believe how rich you are for a horse."
"Eat healthy horse food so you can stay strong."
"You are the best of them all. I know you can win. You just have to keep it up. You are our hero. I hope you win the Triple Crown."
"I like you. Were you scared when they started the race? I bet you were."
"Dear Smarty Jones, How are you doing? Did you like winning the Kentucky Derby race? Well, I got to go now. "Bye!"
