Gossip

(Personal aside: one half of Oregonracing.com indulges in the guilty pleasure of occasionally reading Cindy Adam's gossip column in the New York Post. Monday's was a "seven degrees of seperation" moment for Oregon Racing, when Frank Stronach was the gossip headline. Here's the story:)

"Smarty Jones wasn't the only winning smarty at the Preakness. In the clubhouse I sat with Frank Stronach, founder/chairman of Magna Entertainment, America's leading track owner. His turf includes Pimlico. Said Stronach:

"New York should be the center of racing. Not Kentucky or anyplace else. New York. To make that happen I am prepared to invest a billion dollars."

I right away ordered seconds on the Maryland crab cakes.

"I have 15 tracks - Gulfstream, Pimlico, Santa Anita. Your Belmont is old and run down, built back when people had no choice about what to put up. I want to create a whole new facility. A major entertainment destination center for the entire family. Track for the father, mall for the mother, games for the kids, adjacent Vegas-style hotel with big name concerts. And I'll build up the back end. Stables. Dorms. Housing. Training center for the people."

Stronach's from Austria. "Same town as Schwarzenegger." But, trust me, he speaks better. He's also handsomer. He lives in Canada. His beautiful daughter Belinda came within a blonde hair of becoming prime minister, and creates media copy throughout North America. In '62 he bought his first horse. He now employs 80,000 people. Smarty Jones should only keep running this good.

"With all my tracks I could have a constant program going. Everything linked together. New York, with the greatest population, should be its center. The government has to make up its mind. A new licensing process is coming due in two years. They should just put it out for tender."

The man's right. Then, maybe, we might even have New York steak and New York cheesecake on the lunch menu at Pimlico."

See it here.

UPDATE: Looks like TT beat us to it.

Fair Meet Schedule

From the OTBA website:

Racing at the Oregon Fairs brings live horse racing to all corners of the State and is a great means of introducing the sport to new fans. To keep these meets running, the Oregon Racing Commission allocated "hub funds" (tax dollars generated by hubs licensed to operate in Oregon ) for purses, to fund a jockey incentive program (encourages rider participation), and for capital improvement projects at the Fairs.

The OTBA will be supporting the five Oregon Fair race meets by providing the following incentives for Oregon-bred Thoroughbreds:

Purse supplement for one Oregon-bred race per day.
Owner bonus for Oregon-breds on all purse earnings (approximately 10%).
Breeder award to breeders of winning Oregon-bred Thoroughbreds.

Fair race meets, and dates:

GRANTS PASS - Josephine County Fair/ Southern Oregon Horse Racing Assoc. Race Meet. May 15 through July 5 (19 day meet).

UNION - Easter Oregon Livestock Show June 11 - 13 (3 day meet)

PRINEVILLE - Crooked River Roundup Race Meet July 7 - 10 (4 days)

TILLAMOOK - Tillamook County Fair Race Meet August 12 - 14 (3 days)

BURNS - Harney County Fair September 11, 12 (2 days)

Trainer Makes Headlines

Another nice story from the Mail Tribune:

Retirement hasn’t slowed down Sally Reid.

The 65-year-old former college professor gets to the race track by 7 a.m. and doesn’t leave until early afternoon seven days a week.

Filling those countless hours since late February has been Reid’s work in developing her stable of five thoroughbred horses at the Josephine County Fairgrounds.

Her efforts will come full circle Saturday when she sends two of those horses to the gate during the opener of the 19-day season at Grants Pass Downs.

Caught On Film

In the Jerry Schab Spring Memorial at Walla Walla on May 8 (first race, mixed breed) #5, Lilly Daylight, became fractious in the gate and was scratched.

Apparently, trainer Bill Hoff was “loaded in first” and took a hoof to the chest and hit his head courtesy of Lilly Daylight…according to JS, who photographed this, Hoff was well enough to return to the paddock later to saddle his other entries, fortunately.

(click the image for larger version)

And speaking of caught on film, Nancy Hardin snapped this shot of Flip Nollar's accident (click for larger version):

Thankfully, both the men in these photos are well.

Grants Pass

From a Mail-Tribune (Jackson County) article:

Horsemen from Oregon and Washington have been converging at the fairgrounds in Grants Pass the last couple of weeks. Capacity has been reached in stall applications and others are planning to haul in horses on race days.

"We’re as good as we’ve been as far as having horses," says Rod Lowe, president of the Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association, which co-sponsors the meet with the Josephine County Fair board. "With fuller fields, we should increase our handle."

Much of the credit for the favorable conditions for racing at GP Downs can be attributed to state money generated from account wagering hubs established in the Portland area over the past five years.

"I think I own about one hoof," said Peter Bragdon, the top employee in Gov. Ted Kulongoski's office. "And I'm losing money."

Bragdon, Kulongoski's Chief of Staff, Lobbyist Larry Campbell, Lobbyist David Nelson, and Junki Yoshida (Yes, the Yoshida's teriyaki sauce guy), all own shares a filly named Eyma Chickie Two, who is expected to run at Grants Pass and had her first two starts at Portland Meadows. Honorable Governor Kulongoski himself has watched the filly race.

"This is not a business arrangement," Campbell said. "This is a deal for fun."

Ferguson saddling Winners at EmD

...A nice DRF article on Jim Fergason, top trainer at Portland Meadows during the 2003-2004 meet. Excerpt:

Fergason wrapped up the recently concluded Portland Meadows meeting with a flourish, saddling three winners on the final Saturday card to equal, surpass, and extend the record of 48 wins set by brother Rolland Fergason in 1999. He was also prominent in stakes competition, sending out the meet's top 3-year-old filly, Quiz the Maid, to a trio of added-money wins.

Oregon Hub Handle Increases

From this article at the Thoroughbred Times website:

The good news (frankly, great news) first:

The Oregon Racing Commission’s account wagering hub handled $179,546,773 during the three months ended March 31, a 15.1% increase over the same period last year when the five account wagering providers using the hub took in $155,913,847 in bets.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that America Tab, Youbet.com and TVG go through the Oregon hub, revenue may be lost on Preakness Day:

This year’s second quarter totals could be affected by the fact that Youbet, TVG, and America Tab cannot accept wagers on the Preakness Stakes (G1), traditionally one of the stronger days for wagering outlets. Wagering on the second leg of the Triple Crown is restricted to Magna Entertainment Corp.’s wagering platform XpressBet.

But even with the small damper due to the absence of Preakness wagers, overall this news is great to hear!

Step in the Right Direction

In national headlines...

Smarty Jones has become the first horse cover of Sports Illustrated since Sunny's Halo in 1983. That's good news for those who work to promote racing, especially coupled with smarty Jones' wonderful story.

Magna in the News

From a Thoroughbred Times report:

Magna Entertainment Corp. Chairman Frank Stronach said on Tuesday that he would consider buying Churchill Downs if Magna’s financial performance improves.
"I wouldn’t rule it out," Stronach said at Magna’s annual meeting, according to the Canadian Press. "I think we need another two to three years that we can demonstrate to the public that we are the best company in this industry."

Stronach acknowledged that he would have to convince shareholders of Churchill Downs Inc., which owns Churchill, along with Calder Race Course, Hollywood Park, Arlington Park, Ellis Park, and Hoosier Park.

...Not a bad bet, since the 2004 Kentucky Derby had the best national TV ratings since 1992. Read about that here.

Grants Pass Meet Begins May 15

Just a friendly reminder that racing will begin at Grants Pass on May 15, less than two weeks away. It should be an excellent meet.

Unfortunately, the Josephine County Fair website has not been updated to reflect this season's details, but save for the actual race dates, most of the info will probably remain the same.
