There are some great photos of Grants Pass and Emerald Downs from recent weeks posted here. Lots of Oregon-bred shots, and just noticed: an older photo of a very healthy-looking Kathy Mayo presenting a blanket to the winner of the Bettor's Invitational Handicap in the Grants Pass series.*
*Click below for more information on Kathy Mayo
Mayo was the nation's leading female rider in 1996, beating out Julie Krone by one win for a total of 142.
On January 2, 1998, while riding in a claiming race at Portland Meadows, Mayo's mount flipped over the inside metal rail. Though the horse was uninjured, Mayo suffered greatly when she was thrown against the railing. Mayo was left with no less than fractures to her back, ribs, and scapula, a shattered pelvis, and internal injuries such as a lacerated spleen and kidney damage.
Mayo defied the doctor's predictions of paralysis, and as evidenced by Nancy's photo, looks quite well.
